In these difficult economic times and with the pressing housing shortage in the country, the idea of building a decent home at 10 cents looks like an old wives' tale spilled by the elderly when they get themselves remember their childhood
. However, for Elizabeth, or Maro Elize (Elder Elize), as she is affectionately known in the community of Berseba and her husband, Sam Goliath, it is a surreal reality in which they live.
The Goliath are among 28 residents in the village of Berseba who recently received housing through the Buy-a-Brick initiative of Standard Bank. The elderly couple lived in a hut for more than three decades and at 72, Maro Elize finally has a decent place where life is good.
While 20 homes were built through the Buy-a-Brick initiative, eight of them homes were built with funding from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development. Through the pioneering Buy-a-Brick initiative, the bank is contributing to the provision of affordable housing to low- and zero-income households in Namibia, in collaboration with the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN).
"This house was built with only 10 cents – that's all we had to start – it started by saving 10 cents, then 10 cents and another and before we knew it, we were saving a lot It's all you need to build your home, "said Elize Maro in order to encourage other asylum seekers.

She added that they had slept as peacefully as possible for years when they were sleeping in their new home. When we decided to work with the SDFN to help alleviate the housing shortage in the country, we knew it would make a big difference in people's lives, however, seeing the reaction of Maro Elize just brought a deeper understanding of what it really means.

This year, the bank donated 3.7 million Namibian dollars to the federation through this remarkable initiative. The Buy-a-Brick initiative has become a truly Namibian initiative because blue bankers, communities and other responsible citizens take responsibility for it by giving the initiative a selfless attitude.
Of the houses built with the $ 2 million second stage of the Buy-a-Brick initiative, 16 homes have already been officially handed over to Otjinene on May 18th. The other 14 houses are under construction in Windhoek.
