Susie identifies as Hispanic, giving her only a 47% chance of finding a match in the Be The Match Registry® registry. She beat the odds and found a donor. But many patients, like Jasmine, who is black, are still urgently seeking treatment that will save their lives. Jasmine has only a 23% chance of finding a compatible and available donor. Those who are white have a 77% chance of finding a match.
"I have to be here for my three kids and both on the way," Susie said. "A stranger could save my life, but there are so many other patients – mothers like Jasmine – who also need to find a match now."
A young mother of three and a three-time cancer survivor, Jasmine knows what it takes to be a strong mother. But after being diagnosed with bone cancer, Jasmine discovered that she needed a blood stem cell transplant to have a second chance to live. Until now, she has no correspondence in the registry and must find a donor who shares his African American heritage.
Susie's success in finding a match does not eliminate the disparity. More than ever, Susie is calling on all her supporters to join the registry to help other patients find their partner. She and Jasmine encourage people of various ethnicities to register and register.
Susie must deliver her twins on December 6. She set herself the goal of registering 100,000 diverse ethnic donors on the scheduled date. She has already registered 30,000.
