Instagram is a "visual" platform, but he wants visually impaired people to enjoy it as well. To help them, two new improvements have been introduced to make their task easier.

With more than 285 million visually impaired people in the world, Instagram wants to make sure they can "benefit from a more accessible platform." This week, two new features have been added:

The first is the automatic alternate text that allows visually impaired users to listen to photo descriptions via their screen readers when using Flux, Explorer and Profile. In the announcement of this feature, Instagram says "use object recognition technology to generate a description of the photos for readers [users] can hear a list of items that the photos may contain [they] browse the application. "

The second is a custom alternative text that allows users to provide a richer description of photos when they download them. Similar to alternative auto text, screen reader users will be able to hear this personalized alternative in these images and not the automatic alternative.

Facebook has been developing this technology for some time. So it's pretty surprising that Instagram – the "visual" platform is just starting to do it.
