A Namibian police sergeant (NamPol) in Ongwediva was charged with murder for allegedly killing a suspect in the city on Tuesday around 02:00.
Deputy Commissioner Hilja Haipumbu, coordinator of criminal investigations for the region, confirmed the incident in Nampa on Wednesday, saying the incident occurred at the new reception area in Ongwediva.
Haipumbu said that the deceased, who had not yet been identified, tried to get into the policeman's room without knowing that the suspect was inside.
A crime report submitted to Nampa on Wednesday said the suspect would then have gone outside the room and reportedly chased the deceased while he was trying to flee the scene.
The deceased would have turned around and pulled out a knife at close range, then the officer would also have released his gun (private) and shot the deceased in the chest.
Two Okapi knives, an undisclosed amount of money and mobile phone recharge coupons were found in the possession of the deceased.
The identity of the agent is retained pending his appearance in court.
The investigations are continuing.
