A study from the University of Otago found that 40% of patients with dementia were prescribed anticholinergics to control the symptoms of Parkinson's disease – such as overactive bladder and depression.

The principal investigator, Dr. Sharmin Bala, says however that they can worsen the symptoms of dementia and that they should be closely monitored.
She stated that patients should be subject to regular reviews and that alternatives should be offered where possible.
Bala says that dangerous drugs are often inappropriately prescribed – some are even available over the counter.
