RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – A humpback whale that stranded near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal on November 16 was likely hit by a vessel, according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

The results of a necropsy performed on the whale are consistent with a "catastrophic ship collision with wounds to the propeller".

DFO says that an investigation is underway.

"The results of these necropsies will feed into a growing body of knowledge to help assess threats to whales from the perspective of the health of the population," read a DFO news release. "These data allow us to examine trends, pathogens or other indicators that may affect their life cycle."
