WALVIS BAY – Some mackerel rights holders, whose rights do not expire, were deprived of five percent of their reserve quotas released last week by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources. Some of these companies would have sold the government dreams of tips in terms of added value and would not have kept their promises such as creating jobs.
Fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau, at the launch of Eufuta's new products from Etosha Fishing in Walvis Yesterday, Bay said that he had already sent notifications to the companies involved.
"In order to make sense of our national policy directives, I ordered departmental officials to deduct rights holders' quotas in proportion to the value-added objectives." Esau said:
He added that it will be the agenda in the future, in order to make sure that the companies keep their promises made during quota requests.
"We will reduce the quotas and give to those who really respond to government calls, because we can not compromise our fight against poverty, "he said, days of vain talks have disappeared and he is determined to make sense of the government's valuable policy.
The new punitive measures will be applied to all fishing.
According to Esau, the government has brought clarity in terms of value-added, creatio n jobs and economic inclusion in the fishing industry.
Regarding the National Development Plan 5 (NDP5), the goal is to add 70% of the total. Mackerel landings by 2022.
The target for 2018/2019 is 35 percent, taking into account the total allowable catch of 350,000 metric tonnes. This represents 122,000 metric tons in 2018/2019. This added value is not limited to canning, but includes the filleting of fish species, fresh, chopped, dried produce and soups among others.
"As you can see, we need more than canning facilities to achieve our NDP5 goals in the horse mackerel and other fisheries sector.There is room for further value-added efforts and I call the industry the fishing to find innovative ways to add value and create more jobs, "said Esau.
