WINDHOEK – The First Trust Namibia Foundation Trust has reiterated its financial commitment and announced a contribution of more than N $ 364,000 to CHANGE, highlighting its ongoing commitment to education and skills development programs. CHANGE offers, among other courses, a tailor-made fashion and tailoring program, as well as sales training.
Michaela Huebschle of CHANGE received the Foundation's commitment at the project's graduation ceremony, during which graduates received certificates for successful completion of their training programs.
Jane Katjavivi, Administrator of the FirstRand Namibia Foundation, congratulated the graduates and highlighted the important work done by CHANGE.
"The CHANGE programs allow people to acquire the skills necessary to become productive members of society through rewarding employment. Training courses are a great opportunity for those who do not have formal qualifications, those who need to improve their professional skills and those who do not have positive social support systems. The self-esteem and self-fulfillment that comes from earning a living creates a great sense of trust and pride, "said Katjavivi.
She thanked CHANGE for addressing one of the biggest challenges of rehabilitation, namely the elimination of the stigma ex-offenders face in the job market.
"As a company whose vision is to benefit people and the planet, FirstRand Namibia believes that we should all offer opportunities to empower people to be creative, productive and enterprising. Efforts such as CHANGE must be supported, replicated and resized, "added Katjavivi.
Abiud Kuverua, an ex-offender, started her upholstery business and received training and financial support from the National Literacy Trust via CHANGE. He explained how he learned padding techniques in the Windhoek Central Prison.
"When people see us, they run away and do not want to have anything to do with us. I did not give up and took the opportunity to study and make a difference when I came out of jail. When I was released, I approached CHANGE to enroll in the computer training course and finish my studies successfully. The Financial Literacy Initiative has helped me with material valued at N $ 100,000 for my stuffing business. My dream is to help former offenders by employing them and helping them successfully integrate into society, "Kuverua said.
Programs run by CHANGE contribute to economic and social development by reintegrating ex-offenders into society – giving them a second chance. Training helps people to provide for themselves and their economic, psychological and social benefits, as well as their families. It also has a broader social impact in terms of reducing the number of repeat offenders, thereby improving public safety.
