On Wednesday night, Grimes released her first new song since 2015, critically acclaimed. Angels of art. The new title, "We Appreciate Power," contains Hana (a long-time collaborator), but no new information indicating it's the first single of a new album. The lyrical video that accompanies it displays multiple languages and is apparently located in a dystopian world, with artists touting various weapons while they are slowly spinning.
"We Appreciate Power" is in the lead, the most aggressive single that Grimes has released so far. Somewhere between power pop and simple industrial (with an extended bridge reminiscent of the most memorable moments of a Final Fantasy note), this is clearly a catch of 2018 on Nine Inch Nails' cutting edge rock. While Angels of art Grimes began experimenting with more traditional instruments – namely guitars – after the synthetic and muted experience of 2012 visionsit is a decisive step in the same direction.
The new song comes after a tumultuous and mediatized year for the musician. In February, she announced on Instagram that she would not release new music "so soon" because "the music industry is trashy". Grimes has subsequently published several collaborations with Janelle Monáe, Poppy and Loona. She also made headlines this year for her relationship with technology mogul Elon Musk. She defended Tesla's union practices and was apparently responsible for Musk's brief roundup with rapper Azealia Banks, who claimed she was stuck at home on Instagram.
"We Appreciate Power" was announced on Tuesday with the album covers, as well as the new Grimes sale, with a new very featured logo.
