Huawei releasing the smartphone with a display hole instead of a notch

The notch has become a trend for smartphones thanks to Apple's iPhone X. More phones come out with crenelated screens and some have already developed software solutions to hide it. However, it seems that Huawei wants to get rid of the huge notch by drilling a small hole in the display of a smartphone instead.

Sources claim that Huawei will release a new smartphone in the fourth quarter of 2018 that will feature a 6.39-inch LCD display. It is said that the phone's display will come with a hole in the LCD panel that would house the front-facing camera, according to the South Korean website ETNews. Apparently, it's Huawei's way of increasing the screen-body ratio of the phone.

Huawei's solution would be totally different from what Vivo and Oppo have already done. The Vivo Nex has a small camera pop-up to reveal the front camera, while the Oppo Find X hides the three cameras through a sliding mechanism on its top edge. Huawei's solution requires no moving parts and there is no risk of mechanical failure.

Although Huawei's project to drill a hole in the LCD screen offers a real experience on the screen, it can introduce a new problem. The front camera would be completely surrounded by the screen, as pointed out by Android Authority. Huawei's phone may not have a huge hole, but it would still have some of the display that would be unusable. This could give the smartphone a look a bit similar to the Essential Phone phone.

ETNews also shared an illustration of what could be Huawei's device. The illustration shows that the hole on the screen will be located at the top of the handset. The device will always have a thin bezel on the top to accommodate the speaker and other sensors. Phone Arena also pointed out that the hole would still connect to the top bezel. The Huawei P20 and the P20 Pro both have smaller notches than those of the iPhone X. Huawei's solution may not be to completely remove the notch, but to make it tiny and discreet.

Huawei's upcoming phone will be called, but a leaked roadmap from last year has shown that the company will release the Mate Pro and Mate Lite during the fourth quarter of 2018. It is possible that the new design could be aimed at one of the phones, but it could also be an entirely new device.
