Kalimbwe trial begins today

WINDHOEK – The long awaited trial of the former president of the Student Representatives Council of the University of Namibia (Unam) will begin today in the district court of Windhoek after many postponements.

Joseph Kalimbwe, 25, must be tried for fraud, forgery and use of a counterfeit instrument. His trial was postponed many times as the court issued a final order for his trial in previous court proceedings in September.
According to court records, Kalimbwe was supposed to travel to Florida, USA, to continue his education there three months ago. Kalimbwe was arrested on May 31, 2017 as a result of an incident on the main campus of Unam.

Unam lodged a complaint against him following allegations that he was among those who were inciting a group of students to try to force their way into the university cafeteria & # 39; Grub & # 39; Saturday, May 27, 2017. Students would have wanted to use the cafeteria for study purposes since all other facilities were full. As a result, Kalimbwe and two other students received eviction letters urging them to leave the premises of Unam.

The charge accuses Kalimbwe, a Zambian national, of falsifying his proof of registration for the academic year 2017 between February 20 and May 29, 2017. Regarding the charge of fraud, the prosecution claims that 'with the false document he falsely and with intent defrauded and at the expense of the Ministry of the Interior and Immigration by providing him with a study visa.

With the false document, he allegedly encouraged the university to appoint him president of the CBC, while he was not enrolled in the 2017 academic year.
However, according to Kalimbwe, he has been enrolled at the university since 2013.
