Vice President of Legal Affairs, Kerry Hopkins, testified before the UK's Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Committee on the issue of microtransactions. When asked about the "booty boxes", Hopkins offered them a rather innovative new name: "Mechanics of Surprise". "Well, firstly, we do not call them loot boxes, we see them as mechanisms of surprise … it's something that people like, they like surprises."

Hopkins went on to compare the surprise boxes to "surprise mechanisms" that he says have existed "for years, whether it's Kinder Eggs, Hatchanimals or LOL Surprise". He also defended FIFA's "surprise mechanisms" as "quite ethical and fun enough, rather nice for people".
As a result of another interrogation, Hopkins stated that EA was not in agreement "according to evidence showing that he [lootboxes] leads to gambling. Instead, we think that it is like many other products that people enjoy in a healthy way and enjoy the element of surprise. "
You can listen to the entirety of your testimony from 3:45 pm in the resumption of proceedings of Parliament.
