The initiative was launched by third-year medical students and Namibian national Breda Reed.
Reed said that they wanted to raise 100,000 rand to rescue students from financial exclusion.
The team will undertake the 902 km trip from Vioolsdrift to the Namibian border to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, from 1 December and hopes to finish on 8 December.

He appealed to health professionals to help them set up a fund to ensure that students wishing to go to the field are not excluded financially.
Professor Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University, supported the initiative. He will accompany the group from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek.
"It is heartening to see the passion and enthusiasm of our staff, students and alumni contribute to the success of SU students. The passion of these young men to do something about the problem of funding deficits for students is an inspiration, "said De Villiers.
The band includes Reed, Mias Marais, Luke Titus and Christoff Greyling, all medical students, and Wonderboy Nkosi, a dietary student.
Tuesday marked the 100 days of the # Move4Food campaign of the University of Stellenbosch, another student-driven initiative to create food banks on the Stellenbosch and Tygerberg campuses.
Karen Bruns, senior director of development and alumni relations, said her goal was to raise 10 million rand.
"Although we have not yet achieved our goal, we have received overwhelming support at various levels. We decided to extend the campaign until April 19, 2019 to give students, alumni and friends of the university a new opportunity to put their energy at the service of the target. "
