A team of medical students from the University of Stellenbosch (SU) will undertake an ambitious 902 km cycling circuit from Vioolsdrift to the Namibian border to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of the world. Africa, December 1-8, 2018.
Tuesday, November 27, 2018 marked the 100 days of the # Move4Food campaign of the University of Stellenbosch to the SU – a student-driven initiative aimed at creating food banks on the Stellenbosch and Tygerberg campuses to guarantee that no student of Matie will have to endure the unworthiness of being hungry.
"Our goal of raising R10 million to create sustainable food banks at the University of Stellenbosch remains paramount for our Centennial Drive," said Karen Bruns, Senior Director, Development and Alumni Relations. "Although we have not yet achieved our goal, we have received overwhelming support at various levels. For this reason, we have decided to extend the campaign until April 19, 2019, in order to give students, alumni and friends of the university a new opportunity to devote their energy to carrying out the work. ;goal. "
We want to help our friends become doctors
Breda Reed, a Namibian national and a third-year medical student at Tygerberg, is a pioneer in this initiative with a group of four other students. "We want to help our friends become doctors. We do not think it's fair that some students drop out because they do not have access to basic necessities. "
The group aims to raise R $ 100,000, mainly from health professionals, to help create a fund to ensure that other medical students are not excluded financially. Professor Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-Chancellor, who has a background in medicine, fully supports this initiative and will travel with the Stellenbosch Group to Franschhoek.
De Villiers finished the Cape Cycling race earlier this year to raise money for scholarships.
"It is heartening to see the passion and enthusiasm of our staff, students and alumni contribute to the success of SU students. The passion of these young men to do something about the problem of student funding gaps is inspiring, "says De Villiers.
The group includes Breda Reed (Windhoek), Mias Marsh (Ceres), Luke Titus (Worcester) and Christoff Greyling (Durbanville) – all medical students and Wonderboy Nkosi (Nelspruit) in dietetics.
