WINDHOEK – No decision has yet been made to bring back 327 students and 15 teachers to Anker Institution where Edward // Garoeb Primary School is located.
The students and teachers were transferred to the Fransfontein colony, located about 50 kilometers from Anker, because of frequent seismic tremors that struck the colony earlier this year.
Anker is located at the epicenter of the Kaoko Orogenic Belt, a regional tectonic unit located on the northwestern coast of Namibia.
Two weeks ago, anxious parents demonstrated in front of Anker's colony to have their children sent back to the colony. Some of the issues raised concerned the fact that the Edward Garoeb Elementary School and its Inn were transferred from Sesfontein to Khorixas and that the environment is strange for their children.
Another issue raised was the amount of money for renovations, which was revealed to Anker residents by Kunene Regional Director of Education Angeline Jantze.
According to Harry Eiseb, the relocation has had a negative impact on the legacy of the school and the hostel, which has also harmed the discipline of the children.
"The resettlement has had a negative impact on the religious part of our children, the children who attended the confirmation services have to leave because of this relocation," said Eiseb in a letter.
The community claims that the earthquake is not only present in Anker, but concerns the whole country.
The residents of Anker also appealed to esteemed stakeholders, Sesfontein's advisor, the traditional authority, the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, the office of the Ministry of Education. ombudsman and the government in general, so that they can intervene as quickly as possible.
Eiseb told New Era this weekend that many blocks of hotels at Frans Frederick Elementary School in Fransfontein were overcrowded. "Some children get sick and the toilet does not pull properly. In addition, Frans Frederick Elementary School has children who are in a couple and some have children, so our children will be corrupt, "said Eiseb, a worried woman.
On November 21, at a community meeting with Kunene Governor Marius Shewa, and Kunene Regional Director Jantze Sheya reportedly told participants that the wishes of the Anker community would be granted and that they would not. Edward // Garoeb Elementary School would reopen next year. Eiseb also revealed that out of fifteen teachers, ten did not want to return to the Anker colony.
