LAND consultations in the Oshana region concluded Friday that the government should expropriate land owned by foreigners and absentee landlords without compensation.
The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Peya, attended the consultative meeting of Ongwediva Mushelenga, traditional authorities and religious leaders who claimed to represent the views of the people.
Mushelenga said the meeting was proof that the Namibian government was ready to talk and make decisions for the future.
The consultations also concluded that the government should expropriate underutilized land with compensation for improvements to the land only. In the spirit of "One Namibia, One Nation", the conference participants argued that Namibia was a unitary state and that therefore all Namibians had the right to settle there. anywhere in the country.
Participants also asked that the government remove the vendors' voluntary purchase policy, saying that it did not work.
"This principle has failed, we urge the government to find an alternative and effective way of acquiring land," said the resolutions read by the former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Gender, Erastus Negonga .
The question of the cost of urban land was also raised by residents of Oshana who decided that the government should subsidize the land service in local authorities.
Regarding foreign ownership of urban land: "The conference urged the government to issue a directive to all local authorities and landowners not to allow foreign ownership of urban land," said the resolution .
The conference further concluded that the "red line" was preventing farmers in the northern communal areas from participating in the "lucrative market" for commercial meat. Therefore, the meeting called for the immediate relocation of the "red line" to the border between Namibia and Angola.
The National Resettlement Program was also reviewed as the Regional Conference decided that the criteria for relocation of individuals should be reviewed to include special categories of population, such as veterans, youth and persons with disabilities, food production and food security. With respect to farm sizes and numbers, the conference concluded that the government should adopt the "one farmer and one farm" principle and that the size of farms should be reduced by taking into account land uses
