WINDHOEK – After the change of name of the People's Democratic Movement (PDM) in November 2017, which previously supported under the name of DTA and which linked it to the former colonial administration, the party announced that all its members should get rid of their old DTA cards, register and become a member of the renowned PDM cards.
Its leader, McHenry Venaani, said that the change of political brand was necessary and that the new name resulted in a new identity, a new association and a greater sense of belonging.
However, this week, PDM has announced to members, supporters and the general public the organization of its extraordinary 2018 convention at Greiters Lodge, just outside Windhoek, next week. It was during this announcement that the party said that all its members were asked to register under the new name. PDM Secretary General Manuel Ngaringombe, who announced the announcement, said the new venue is needed because previously announced meetings did not materialize due to logistical issues.
According to him, these included premises lacking adequate housing for all members and a spacious place for the duration of the planned electoral convention.
However, Ngaringombe noted that, in view of the importance of the issues to be dealt with at the Extraordinary Congress, the said meeting will take place on the above mentioned dates, namely from next week, Friday, December 7 at 6 pm; and Saturday (8 December) from 10:00.
In addition, he announced a visit to the Central Business District (CBD) Saturday from 8:00 am. He added that the elective congress will deliberate more on constitutional amendments, in order to align with the renowned movement.
At the next meeting, he added, the party will discuss the preparations under way for the elective convention scheduled for the first quarter of 2019.
"The move to the next year of our Elective Convention has been made necessary by our internal restructuring exercise across the country. Such a process is time-consuming and is still ongoing, in the hope that by the time we go to the Elective Convention, we would have come a long way in this regard, "he said.
"I can tell you that the PDM has touched all 14 political regions of Namibia so far and we have managed to establish branches in the 121 constituencies. We are now ready for an internal elective congress. We would like to let all our members, sympathizers and supporters know that we will be working in the field during the Christmas holidays and meet the members of our movement, they must seek advice on all matters concerning the PDM. " he noted.
