Seychelles awarded at Kenya's Blue Economy Forum with prize for the maritime sector

(Seychelles News Agency) – Seychelles President Danny Faure received the Blue Economy Awards on the African maritime sectors at a banquet organized by the African Union Commission Tuesday at the InterContinental Hotel in Kenya.

The award, which was presented by Commission President Moussa Fakki, recognizes countries, associations and individuals who have made a significant contribution to the blue economy agenda in Africa, State House said Wednesday.

"This award recognizes Seychelles as the champion of the blue economy in the maritime sector, on the African continent and around the world," Faure said.

The chief of Seychelles, an island nation from the western Indian Ocean, was attending the Conference on Sustainable Economy held in Nairobi, Kenya from November 26 to 28 at the. invitation of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Faure thanked the AU Commissioner for the award and the other partners whose support is essential, such as the UN, the World Bank, the European Union, the Commonwealth, the Association of the riparian countries of the Indian Ocean (IORA) and the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC).

He said the support of the various organizations had helped "Seychelles in one way or another and helped us to firmly secure the blue economy in Africa's development agenda".

Faure also congratulated the African Shipowners Association and his secretary general, Fumni Folorunsi, for his work and added that he was looking forward to the first investment forum. Panafrican maritime line to be held in Seychelles in March.

To conclude, Faure declared: "I dedicate this prize to all my brothers and sisters from my continent, Africa, as well as to the hard-working and committed citizens of my beloved country, Seychelles."

Other recipients of the awards were Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Togo Faure Gnassingbe, and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.
