Skype realizes 2018 in reality and adds read receipts to discussions

Reading receipts are a paradise for impatient people wondering why you have not responded and hell for those who are hunted down by their friends, family, and coworkers.

Regardless, they are a standard messaging feature in apps like iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and others. It is therefore surprising that one of the first Skype online messaging services just adds them.

The feature has arrived on the latest preview version of the application for iOS, Android and the desktop. Receipts are available in one-on-one conversations and group discussions for up to 20 people. For the latter, you will be able to see exactly which members of the conversation saw the message and which ones did not read it.

Here's what Microsoft says in the release notes (via Windows Central): "Read receipts let you see who saw your messages at a glance. a bed your message, its avatar appears below in Skype chats allowing you to see how far any one has read in the conversation without pressing each message. "

If you are one of those people who likes to respond when they are very good and ready, the feature can be easily disabled in the settings of the application.

To use them at this point you will also need to chat with someone who also has the preview installed on their device. We expect this feature to be deployed soon, but we'll keep you posted on this front.

Read receipts arrive at the moment when Microsoft is looking to snatch some of Slack's initiative in the business environment. In May, Slack announced that it now has 8 million daily users, up from 6 million since September 2017.
