ONGWEDIVA – Oshakati City Council has no councilors after the Swapo party has recalled its newly installed councilors for allegedly defying an order to install former city mayor Onesmus Shilunga as chairman of the executive committee.
Instead of Shilunga, the ruling party's advisers would have voted in favor of Katrina Shimbulu as chairman of the steering committee, which is contrary to the party's directive.
Shimbulu, who was also mayor, is an ordinary member of the last two years.
The party had not given any directive regarding other positions, such as mayor and deputy mayor.
The city's swapo advisers are Angelus Iyambo (Mayor), Ndamononghenda Hamunyela (Deputy Mayor), Loise Shivolo, Gabriel Kamwanka, Shilunga and Shimbulu.
A letter to the party's general secretary, Sophia Shaningwa, Samuel Nelongo, Swapo's regional coordinator for Oshana, says councilors have been removed from office for failing to comply with his directive.
"You are hereby requested to inform all councilors of the local authorities of Oshakati City Council on the Swapo ticket that they are no longer municipal councilors of local authorities with immediate effect until the date of the meeting. to new order, "reads the letter.
Shaningwa added that the party would advise the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Peya Mushelenga, on the next course of action. Shaningwa confirmed yesterday that she was the author of the letter requesting the withdrawal of all party advisers.
In an interview with New Era, Nelongo said that when the appointment of councilors was allowed, the Oshakati councilors requested a hearing with the party, which was granted to them.
"Counselors needed to be given an opportunity, as they had requested, but they were told that the directive needed to be followed. However, they acted contrary to what the directive had told them to do, "Nelongo added.
Councilors have since received letters of withdrawal.
