Washington, DC, April 10, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Olympus, a global leader in the design and delivery of innovative solutions for medical and surgical procedures, will provide non-profit funding to the National Colorectal Cancer Alliance (Alliance) awareness of colorectal cancer screening in the United States and introduction of inexpensive, free screenings for every 100 people at risk in 2019.
To support the Alliance's efforts to increase public awareness of life-saving colorectal screening, Olympus is also sponsoring the Alliance's Big Colon National Tour. Screening is the first essential step to identify and treat colorectal cancer, which can be fought at 90% if it is detected early.
The Alliance, which seeks to end colorectal cancer while alive, advocates colonoscopy screening or one of the other approved methods. Unfortunately, one-third of eligible adults are screened. Olympus support will allow the Big Colon Tour to make 20 stops in the United States in 2019.
In order to help people facing financial barriers to screen, Olympus is providing a hundred people at risk for colonoscopy as part of the Alliance's Blue Hope Prevention Awards program to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary and improve access to colonoscopies.

Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive medical procedure for identifying precancerous polyps and cancer of the large intestine. Colonoscopies allow doctors to identify pre-cancerous polyps that can be removed before becoming malignant. Funds provided by Olympus will support colonoscopy procedures for those who have applied through the Alliance's financial assistance website.

Colorectal cancer is estimated to be diagnosed in 145,600 Americans this year and 51,020 will die from it. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the third most common cancer in men and women, with approximately 90% of new cases occurring in people aged 50 and older.
For most adults, the American Cancer Society recommends that screenings begin at age 45. Individual risk factors, such as ethnicity, lifestyle, and family history, may require earlier screening. A doctor can provide more information on how and when screening should begin.
