The Ovaherero Genocide Foundation submitted a petition on the genocide of Nama and Ovaherero to the UN Resident Coordinator Rachel Odede last Thursday in Windhoek.

The petition was read by the head of the Association of Traditional Nama Authorities, Gaob Isaak on behalf of the two communities, asked Odede to forward the petition to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres , for it to be distributed to all members of the UN

The petition states that both communities have tried to obtain Namibia and Germany. to initiate a dialogue for the negotiation of reparations with the affected communities, but the German government refused it.

"The latter had unilaterally agreed that the negotiations would be only bilateral or from government to government and not with individuals., Which, in our opinion, was deliberately meant to exclude us," the statement said.

The two communities therefore want to appeal to the UN for a resolution that would officially recognize the atrocities committed by Germany against them between 1904 and 1908.

Odede said that she would pass on the petition as requested.
