The last of us: Part 2 is about honoring Ellie, and Naughty Dog insists that she is perhaps the only playable character. But in a new interview, Naughty Dog Vice President, Neil Druckmann, hinted that he would have someone else for the ride.
"Well, Ellie was an NPC, but she's the protagonist of this story, the player controls Ellie, he's sure to say with the game we've done in the past that there will be NPCs with you in this story, even if we do not show [the NPC] in this demo, "Druckmann told Buzzfeed.
"And our general approach is to say, again," How do we treat them as people, how do we encourage them to act honestly like these people, how do we give them interesting they can sail the world, "
In the 2013 original, players controlled Ellie Joel's father-figure for the majority of the game with Ellie serving as an NPC Companion. For an extended segment, however, the roles reverse with Ellie becoming the playable character and Joel an NPC. Fans are wondering what will be Joel's role in the sequel since Naughty Dog announced it in December 2016. Druckmann fans with an anonymous NPC will probably fuel other speculation about the character, as Druckmann did not mention by name in the interview
Naughty Dog had to redraw the fight of The Last of Us in order to make it a good choice for Ellie. Meanwhile, Ellie's kiss in the 2018 E3 trailer of The Last of Us Part II might have been a step forward for diversity in video games, but the medium still has a long way to go in LGBTQ representation material
The Last of Us Part II comes exclusively to PlayStation 4 on an unknown release date.
