WINDHOEK – The trial of a man accused of killing a police officer from the town of Windhoek and two civilians in an abnormal car accident will continue next year.
Morne Mouton, 23, appeared before the Windhoek Court of First Instance where he was informed that his trial would resume on 1 February 2019. This came to light after the public prosecutor, Rowan van Wyk, informed him the court that the state was not ready to prosecute. pre-trial presentation as foreseen in previous court proceedings.
Mouton is being prosecuted for three counts of willful homicide, driven by alcohol and careless driving, for which he has denied any guilt.
The charges stem from a terrible accident that killed police officer Manfred Gaoseb, 35, and two civilians, Werner Simon, 22, and Joshua Ngenokesho (age unknown). The incident occurred on July 04, 2015 on Sam Nujoma Drive.
According to witnesses who appeared at the hearing, police were witnessing a robbery incident in Hochland Park when she met three unknown men in a taxi stopping along Sam Nujoma Drive.
The police reportedly stopped to question the strangers. While the police were busy interrogating strangers, they noticed a gray sedan approaching the VW Polo and driving at high speed.
Mouton's car allegedly hit the stopped police vehicle and then killed and killed Gaoseb and the other two men instantly.
Mouton, in his defense, indicated that on the day in question, he had seen a man cross the road and get out of the way. According to him, his vision was blurred by the lights of two parked vehicles that were facing traffic.
During the trial, Mouton informed the court that he was not under the influence of alcohol and that he was not driving too fast to the date in question. This despite the testimonials claiming that he smelled of alcohol and that his manner of speaking was a sign of a person under the influence of alcohol.
