Volcano of Krakatau
Krakatau, a small group of islands located in the Sunda Strait, between the islands of Sumatra and Java, is one of the world's most famous volcanoes. This is a caldera almost completely submerged with 3 outer islands belonging to the rim and a new cone, Anak Krakatau, which forms a new island since 1927 and remains very active.
Krakatau exploded dramatically in a devastating Plinian 1883 eruption that killed more than 30,000 people (mostly by the huge tsunamis triggered by the eruption). The eruption was one of the first information events in the world after telegraph lines connected the different continents.
