Wang Shuang named AFC player of the year – Xinhua

BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) – Chinese footballer Wang Shuang has been named Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Year Player at the AFC Annual Awards Ceremony in Muscat , Oman, Wednesday.

Wang becomes the fourth Chinese player to win this award after Sun Wen, Bai Jie and Ma Xiaoxu.

"I would like to thank the AFC for this remarkable award," Wang said in his thank you speech. "It really means a lot to win, and I want to thank my country, the Chinese Football Federation and my teammates for the national team for their trust in me and for always encouraging me to think big."

Wang was part of the Chinese team that finished third in the Asian Women's Cup and won the silver medal at the Asian Games. At the club level, she joined France, Paris Saint-Germain, earlier this year, and became the first Chinese scorer in the UEFA Women's Champions League.

"It's a new start for me in Europe and it's only the beginning," Wang said. "I think this award will serve me as a boost to help me succeed at the highest level."

"Football is a sport that represents equality and I hope that this prize will remind Asian girls that if they have a dream, they must continue to pursue it and make it a reality."

Qatar defender Abdelkarim Hassan has been named player of the year in the AFC. Japan's Go Oiwa, who led Kashima Antlers to his first AFC Champions League title, was named coach of the year.
