General Motors announced yesterday the imminent closure of its plant in Oshawa, Ontario, to cut nearly 3,000 jobs. In explaining its decision, the company said it will refocus on the future of the automobile, focusing on electric options, autonomous driving and connected. So what does this future look like? We have seen glimpses and great promises so far, but nothing resembles the pivot that requires a radical change of direction from traditional builders.
We have heard about autonomous vehicles for years, but they are not yet on the street, except for tests that sometimes take place in deplorable conditions. Electric cars are already here, but have not yet reached a critical mass or price that works. And everything is connected now, so of course, the cars will be. What exactly is the car of the future? What's selling it? And more importantly, who builds it? How will the industry evolve in the coming decade? Is GM's move a sign of car manufacturers leaving Southern Ontario, or is it just behind its peers and hoping to catch up?
