YouTube's move to eliminate these black bars has migrated from the mobile to the office – but not everyone is happy to push for a bigger view of the video. Over the weekend, a Google representative shared an update of the YouTube player on the desktop inside a forum. The move, which came first to the mobile application of the platform, aims to increase the size of videos on this traditional YouTube page with the usual tools instead of the full-screen view.
The new look varies depending on the original size. For a 4: 3 video, the black bars are eliminated on the sides of the video and the images occupy a larger space on the screen, where the usual features such as the playlist and the "up next" comments remain.
Do not take all the space, but the smartphone friendly format looks bigger and replaces the black background with a white background. For the 16: 9 format, there were no black bars to eliminate, but YouTube removes some white space to enlarge the video.
Earlier this spring, a similar update for the YouTube app allowed video pages to fit the screen size, allowing larger videos, especially with formats like vertical video. First spotted by Android Police, the update was launched discreetly, a representative of Google later sharing the details in a message on the forum.
This forum is also filled with users complaining larger videos. Some users say that the quality of the video drops and must be updated manually for optimal quality. Others say that they can not type in a comment without cutting a portion of the video, thanks to the elimination of this extra white space.

The Google representative, however, said to keep the comments coming and that the suggestions made to the official feedback tool would take precedence over the forum's comments. The company has not yet commented on the additional changes that could be made to the new larger video design.
The goal of YouTube is however to better adapt to the range of different video formats now downloaded online. In addition to making the 16: 9 download the most popular, the black bars are eliminated in the 4: 3 format and even the vertical video seems larger despite the horizontal format of the desktop. Vertical video is now popular enough to warrant setting up an entire network dedicated to mobile-friendly format, and the update allows YouTube's desktop reader to be better suited to the format. The move comes after YouTube's move to a cleaner look last year.
