Zopherus, a team from Arkansas, won second place with a concept that would be built with a standalone 3D printer.

Team Mars Incubator, a collection of engineers and artists, took third place.

Each group produced videos giving an overview of their designs and miniature models printed in 3D, which were disassembled to highlight the interiors.

A panel of judges awarded points for the architectural layout, programming, efficient use of the interior space, as well as for the scalability and constructability of the 3D printing of the # 39; habitat.

Points have also been awarded for realism and aesthetic representation.

Each team received between $ 32,000 (£ 24,500) and $ 34,000 (£ 26,000) for their efforts.

The challenge will run from May 1 to 4, 2019, at a competition where two teams will print their structures at a site in Peoria, Illinois.

NASA will award $ 800,000 during the event.

The organization said its centennial competition would facilitate human space exploration and could lead to cheaper housing on Earth.
