As the world eagerly watched NASA’s Perseverance rover on Thursday successfully landed on Mars, snapshots flooded social media with enthusiastic viewers posing on the Red Planet.
Most were courtesy of NASA Mars Perseverance Photo Booth, a virtual photo shoot where you can upload a photo to see yourself (or a certain grumpy senator) posing on Mars, next to the NASA robotic robot or the Atlas V rocket that launched it into space, or on the ground at mission control. It is one of many interactive features the agency created to get space lovers into the hype, including several themed social media filters, an interactive launch package and a 3D tour of Perseverance.
“Welcome to Mars! We can’t (yet!) Take you to Mars, but we can bring you the red planet, ”reads the NASA photo booth page.
NASA initially rolled out its suite of perseverance-themed online goodies last summer, but the rover’s highly anticipated launch this week has sparked a new wave of pseud0-Mars selfies on Twitter, Instagram, and more. (If you picked one up, feel free to share it in the comments!)

The NASA rover successfully landed on Mars at 3:55 p.m. ET (12:55 p.m. PT) Thursday, landing in Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient lake and river delta. The 2,260-pound rover will pass the Red Planet over the next two years in search of evidence that it once harbored microscopic life. Perseverance, which is now the fifth rover to reach the Martian surface, is one of three missions to arrive on the planet this month along with the UAE Hope Probe and the Chinese mission Tianwen-1.
