NASA discovered a strange ice structure on the surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon, fueling the theories of extraterrestrial life. However, Titan has often proved difficult to study because it is shrouded in dense haze and heavy rain.
Scientists have estimated that the structure of the ice could be a sign of ancient volcanic activity.
According to researchers at the University of Arizona, the ice block was probably created by cryo-volcanoes that caused an eruption of water and ice.
The ice corridor described as "ice ribbons" covers essentially 40% of the diameter of the moon.
Caitlin Griffith, a researcher at the University of Arizona, said, "This icy hallway is confusing because it does not match any surface features or measurements of the basement."
They also point out that the only other areas of Titan with a large amount of ice exposed in the bedrock are areas "dug by craters or exposed to erosion".
