Although it will be years before the first humans set foot on Mars, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) gives the public the opportunity to send their names, stencilled, on the red planet with NASA Mars 2020 robot.

Those who want to send their names to the Red Planet during the March 2020 mission can get a souvenir boarding pass and their stencilled names on tokens to be affixed to the rover, according to NASA.

The event will last until September 30, 2019. More than 3.3 million people worldwide sent more than 3.3 million people on board by March 2020 Thursday night, with contributions from the Turkey in the lead.

"While we are ready to launch this historic Mars mission, we want everyone to participate in this exploration journey," said Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

"It's an exciting time for NASA, as we embark on this journey to answer deep questions about our neighboring planet, and even about the origins of life itself," he said.

The launch of March 2020 is scheduled for July 2020. The satellite is expected to land on Mars in February 2021.

The rover, weighing more than 2,000 kg (over 1,000 kg), will look for signs of past microbial life, characterize the climate and geology of the planet, collect samples for its future return to Earth, and pave the way for human exploration of the red planet.
