NASA: Moon contracts and lives "moon tremors"

A new NASA study shows that the moon is narrowing, giving way to "moon tremors".

The shrinkage occurred as the moon's interior cooled, NASA said in a press release on Monday. It has become thinner by about 150 feet over the last few hundred million years.

The narrowing caused the crust to form "thrust faults" on the surface of the moon, which look like steps.–cliffs shaped.

"Our analysis shows for the first time that these faults are still active and are likely to produce moonshells today, as the moon continues to cool and shrink gradually," said Thomas Watters, a scientist at The NASA. "Some of these earthquakes can be quite strong, about 5 on the Richter scale."

Scientists have been able to draw this conclusion from data from four seismometers placed on the surface of the moon during Apollo missions, NASA said. Other evidence came from photos of the moon's surface taken by NASA's spacecraft Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
