LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – Bigelow Aerospace, a company based in North Las Vegas, has a big visitor this week. NASA is visiting the company to test the B330, an expandable living space.
Currently, Bigelow has a smaller version of the international space station called BEAM. BEAM has just celebrated its three years in space and has been extended until 2028. BEAM is about 1/20 of the size of the B330.
This new structure, the B330, can enter space in a single launch and can accommodate four people indefinitely, five people for several months and six people for several weeks.
Bigelow is one of four companies to present its technologies to NASA in the hope of being chosen to continue the design and send a structure in space. NASA spent the week in Bigelow testing the structure and giving its opinion.
According to President and Founder Robert Bigelow, the eight astronauts added, among other things, the addition of extra handles around the spacecraft, essential for moving in a zero gravity environment.
"They were very appreciative and we really appreciated the fact that these people have the experience of the flight and so they took the plane, so it is important to know their opinion," he said. Bigelow.
Bigelow said they now have the current structure on the ISS, the goal being to go to Mars, which involves going to the Moon first.
"The number one, we want to be part of the bridge, we would really like to do that. We would like to be part of everything related to Mars, all of his expedition, "said Bigelow.
