Elsewhere, Merck & Co. has ended its search for a COVID-19 vaccine and will instead focus on developing therapies for those who already have the disease.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been approved for emergency use in Australia and AstraZeneca Plc has told European Union officials that production issues will result in the delivery of 60% less vaccine than promised to the first trimester.

Meanwhile, AMC Entertainment has raised $ 917 million in debt and equity, hinting that the beleaguered movie channel will file for bankruptcy. The company said the fund is extending its financial track “until 2021”.

GameStop shares rose on Monday as short sellers continued to rush for the exit after short-term interest recently hit over 150% of outstanding shares. The stock had climbed 226% from its Jan. 12 close until Friday.
In commodities, West Texas Intermediate crude oil slipped 9 cents to $ 52.18 a barrel and gold added $ 8.20 to $ 1,864.40 an ounce.
European markets were lower overall, with the UK FTSE 100 weaker by 0.92% while the French CAC 40 and German DAX 30 were both down 1.22%.
In Asia, the Shanghai Composite Index in China rose 0.49%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.67%, and the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index climbed 2.41%.
