National Express announced that it was suspending its entire national network of coach services starting at midnight Sunday.

The firm said tightening Covid restrictions and declining passenger numbers were the reason for the decision.

He added that he hoped to restart services in March.

All customers whose trip has been canceled will be contacted and offered a free change or full refund, the company said.

All travel before Monday January 11 will be completed to ensure that passengers on essential trips are not stranded.

Chris Hardy, Managing Director of National Express UK Coach, said: “We have provided an important service for essential travel needs. However, with tighter restrictions and declining passenger numbers, it is no longer appropriate to do it.

He added that as the vaccination program rolled out and government guidelines changed, the company would regularly review when services could restart.

“We plan to get back on the road as soon as the time is right and have put in place an interim restart date of Monday March 1,” he said.

National Express first suspended coach services during the coronavirus crisis in April, then restarted in July.

Services are half-functioning, with strict cleaning and Covid protocols. As the tiered structure came into effect, the demand for services declined.

As with the previous suspension, employees will be dismissed.

Companies that transport passengers, including coach, rail and aviation companies, have come under intense pressure during the coronavirus crisis.

Ryanair announced on Thursday that it will make significant reductions in its flight schedule from January 21, with little or no flights to or from the UK or Ireland until “draconian travel restrictions are removed”.

Rail services are expected to be cut during a lockdown, with some in the industry forecasting cuts of between 50% and 60% from normal service.

In England’s first nationwide lockdown, services were cut to almost half.
