But Nicola Coughlan has revealed that she was completely unaware of the bigger twist involving her character until she was hired.

The 33-year-old, from Galway, told Variety she discovered Penelope’s big secret while reading a fan thread online.

At the end of the first season, which hit Netflix on Christmas Day, Penelope is unveiled as none other than Lady Whistledown.

Lady Whistledown is the pseudonym of the author of a gossip bulletin which frequently shakes the high society of Regency England.

Nicola, who was also a fan favorite as a gay schoolgirl from Northern Ireland during The Troubles in Derry Girls, was honest about her audition from Bridgerton to Variety.

“When I went for the first audition, I only had a few days to prepare; I didn’t have time to read the books or do anything like that. I just thought, “I’ll give it a try and if I get a second call I’ll read it all,” she confessed.

“But that didn’t happen, I just got the job. So it was like, “I’d better read these books and find out who this character is.” ‘

By “the books” Nicola was referring to the Bridgerton series of romance novels by Julia Quinn, specializing in period plays.

Nicola shared, “ I’ve been to a lot of online fan forums as well, as these books have been out for 20 years. People adore them and have such a bond with them. Penelope really means a lot to them. It was on a forum that I realized she was Lady Whistledown. When I saw it I thought, “No, no, no, no, that can’t be right.”

She said: ‘I kept rereading it because it didn’t make sense: [I’m] receive this amazing role on a Shondaland-Netflix show, and that’s that role. It is quite breathtaking.

While chatting with Variety, Nicola also said that “ it was so much fun, ” filming Penelope’s reveal as Lady Whistledown.

“We had to film this in the middle of COVID. I had to be super, super secret. I had to be flown in from Ireland, and tested and tested and tested, and put together.

She remembered, “It was super secret; I couldn’t let anyone know I was there or what was going on. But it was so much fun filming that.
