National Guard to stay in Washington in March due to Trump impeachment trial: report

Thousands of National Guard soldiers will remain in Washington, DC by the former President TrumpDonald Trump NYT: Rep. Perry was instrumental in Trump’s alleged plan to oust the interim Arizona GOP censorious state Republicans McCain, Flake and Ducey Biden and the British Prime Minister discuss the NATO and multilateralism in a PLUS callimpeachment trial, four unidentified sources told Politico.

With the former president’s trial in the Senate set to begin on February 8, the Pentagon is reportedly concerned about the possibility of mass protests in the city.

Up to 5,000 troops will remain in the nation’s capital until mid-March, the media reported. The Guard had previously been deployed following the deadly January 6 riots by pro-Trump mobs seeking to overturn the 2020 election results.

Members of the guard, meanwhile, objected to what they say was an unclear mission.

“Frankly, this is not a ‘combat zone’ so the combat conditions should not apply,” an Afghan veteran currently deployed in the capital told Politico.

Members of the base guard have not received official justification for their continued presence, two members said.

“There is no defined situation, no mission statement… It is very unusual for any military mission,” added one member. “We’re usually given a situation, with defined mission scopes, and at least a tentative plan for how to execute those goals.”

The Pentagon will keep around 7,000 members of the Guard as riot security in the city until early February and will remove around 2,000 when the trial begins, according to Politico. Another member of the Guard told the outlet that the Guard “is not going to allow any surprises.” About 25,000 troops were in the city for President Biden’s inauguration without incident.

There are also security concerns around March 4, when some supporters of the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory hope Trump will be inaugurated for a second term.

The Hill has contacted the Pentagon for comment.
