Several sailors sustained minor injuries after a US Navy submarine collided with an unidentified object last weekend in the South China Sea, multiple reports said Thursday.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement that the fast-attack submarine USS Connecticut struck the object while submerged on the afternoon of October 2. a safe and stable condition.
“The nuclear power plant and spaces of the USS Connecticut have not been affected and remain fully operational. The extent of the damage to the rest of the submarine is being assessed, ”the statement concluded. “The US Navy has not requested assistance. The incident will be investigated.
The Pacific Fleet did not specify the location of the USS Connecticut when the incident occurred, saying the ship “was operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region.” However, The Associated Press and USNI News reported that the collision took place in the South China Sea while the submarine was on routine operations.
Both outlets reported that the submarine was heading for the port of Guam and that the incident had not been announced earlier in order to maintain operational security.
The Associated Press, citing two Navy officials, reported that two sailors aboard the USS Connecticut sustained moderate injuries and about nine others sustained minor injuries such as scrapes and bruises. All were treated aboard the submarine.
It is not known what object the ship hit, but the AP reported investigators ruled out another submarine. An official suggested at the point of sale that it could be a sunken ship, a sunken container, or some other unknown object.
The collision is not the first unfortunate incident to befall the USS Connecticut. Earlier this year, crew members aboard the submarine complained of a bedbug infestation for months and alleged that commanders were slow to resolve the issue. A Navy spokeswoman denied that bedbugs were found aboard the submarine before February of this year.
