In May, Dick Wolf and his Law and order machine decided to overturn decades of Law and order the story moving forward with Law & Order: for the defense, a show about a criminal defense company that would build each episode on “the promise of a contemporary moral tale” (presumably based on whether the people the company defends really deserve to be defended or not ). It was strange, if only because the people running Law and order seemed to be only partially attached to the actual premise of the show – you don’t spend decades working on various TV shows about how cops are almost always right and how prosecutors are almost always right and how lawyers defense are only slightly better than the criminals they represent without having a very specific view of how the whole system works.
It was all for nothing anyway, as the show has already been boxed. Law & Order: for the defense was supposed to air Thursdays on NBC this fall, but now it’s been pulled in favor of The blacklist (ending Dick Wolf’s dreams of controlling all NBC programming on Thursday). It comes from Variety, which does not explain why Law & Order: for the defense was pulled, but it seems pretty obvious that there was something about this specific project that NBC and / or the Dick Wolf folks didn’t like, like, maybe, the fact that he was acted as defense lawyers. Variety says NBC, Wolf and Universal are working on another new Law and order title which will hopefully not be about criminals and suspects with rights, but now For defense will head to the heap of abandoned Law and order fallout next Law and order: hate crimes, which always seems to be one of the worst ideas we’ve ever had.
