SC reports 638 new cases of COVID-19, 5 new deaths on Thursday

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 331 new confirmed cases and 307 probable new cases of the virus on Thursday. These figures are correct as of July 13.

The difference between confirmed and probable cases is based on the type of test a person receives. The probable cases are treated as cases confirmed by the doctors, specifies the DHEC.

The deaths reported on Thursday all occurred within the past two weeks.

DHEC said that “the delay in reporting an individual’s death during this pandemic is often attributed to ensuring that the death is classified accurately.”

While new cases of COVID-19 were down in South Carolina in June, cases are now on the rise.

The number of COVID-19 cases remains low compared to the winter outbreak, but the number of cases is increasing.

A NBC News Analysis found that as of July 7, the state had experienced a 55% jump from the previous 14 days.

THE LAST

Health officials continue to urge all residents to get vaccinated against the virus.

A recent review of DHEC data suggests that people who are not fully vaccinated are the cause of nearly all hospitalizations and deaths related to COVID-19.

COVID-19 VACCINES

Anyone over the age of 12 in South Carolina is currently eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

As of July 13, DHEC reported that South Carolina residents eligible for the vaccine:

• 49.4% received at least one vaccine – 2,122,132 people
• 43.6% are fully vaccinated – 1,871,017 people

PERCENTAGE OF POSITIVE MONITORING

Percentage positive refers to the number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 compared to the number of tests performed.

DHEC reports that the percentage of positive results on the 5,624 molecular tests that were most recently reported to them was 7.3% (not including antibody tests).

COVID-19 HOSPITALIZATIONS

As of Tuesday, the DHEC reported that 74.34% of inpatient beds in South Carolina are in use while 68.27% of intensive care beds are in use.

There are 192 hospital patients who have or are suspected of having COVID-19 and awaiting testing, DHEC said. Of these patients, 53 are in intensive care.

DHEC reports 1,940 ventilators available in the state, of which 358 are in service. COVID-19 patients represent 16.

MONITORING MIS-C AND VIRUS VARIANTS

DHEC has a dashboard that indicates the number of cases of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 in South Carolina.

It also shows how much case of different variants were found as is, by type.

To date, there have been 12 reported cases of the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 in South Carolina.
