– North Carolina added 3,117 more coronavirus cases on Sunday, the third highest figure in a day during the pandemic.

The daily total trailed only the record 3,885 reported on Saturday and 3,119 reported on Wednesday.

The continued surge in infections pushed the state’s seven-day moving average to 2,699 new cases per day over the past week, marking a new high.

Tracking NC coronavirus cases by county

Mitchell, Alexander and Columbus counties had the highest rate of new cases in the past two weeks, based on the number of people per 100,000 residents of the county who tested positive during that time.

About 7.9% of coronavirus tests produced positive results, on the sixth consecutive day the metric was above 7.5%. State officials have said they want this rate to not exceed 5%.

The state’s streak of days with more than 1,000 people hospitalized with the virus continues unchecked, with 1,395. October 9 was the last day fewer than 1,000 people were in North Carolina hospitals for COVID- 19.

Another 50 virus-related deaths were reported statewide on Sunday, the third-highest single-day total to date. This brings the seven-day average to 28 deaths per day over the past week.
