Nearly one million Sunbeam Crock-Pots recalled for risk of burns

The problem, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is “The recalled Crock-Pot multicooker may be pressurized when the lid is not fully locked.” What they say, “can cause the lid to come off suddenly during use of the product, posing a risk of burns to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product.”

Sunbeam has so far received 119 reports of loose lids resulting in “99 first degree to third degree burns”.

The recall includes approximately 914,410 units in the United States and 28,330 in Canada. The multicookers have been sold in-store and online at retailers including Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), Amazon (AMZN) and other outlets across the country between July 2017 and this month.

Affected products, which cost between $ 70 and $ 100, have the date codes K196JN to K365JN and L001JN to L273JN engraved on the bottom of the base or on a pin of the electrical outlets.

The CPSC says owners of the product should “immediately stop” using it in pressure cooker mode, but they can continue to use it for slow cooking and stir-fries. Crock-Pot will ship replacement lids free of charge to consumers who contact them.

“Consumers who continue to use the multicooker in pressure cooker mode while waiting for the replacement lid should be sure that the lid is turned to the fully locked position by aligning the arrow on the lid with the lock symbol on the base,” recalls the reminder notice says.
