Announced at I / O 2019 among many other privacy commitments, Google Nest is starting to migrate from the Nest Account to Google. An update for Nest customers for Android and iOS today allows you to make the transition, with transparent and secure integrations presented as perks.
The transition to Google's login is long overdue, given the lack of protection from Nest accounts. At the present time, two-factor authentication (2FA) is only available through SMS, while Google accounts better detect malicious connection attempts.
Earlier this year, many reports mention compromised passwords of other services used to access Nest accounts that reused credentials. Smart devices have been accessed and then used inappropriately by malicious parties.
After upgrading to Nest version 5.38 for Android and iOS, or to the Nest Home web page, many users see a "Migrate to Google Account" option on the General Account page. The advertised benefits include:
A secure account
Sign in to the Nest or Home app with the same account you use with Google services like Gmail. Both apps will now show the same homes and members.
Seamless product integration
Nest and Google product integrations will be streamlined and work together to create seamless experiences. For example, if you have a Nest Thermostat and a Google home, just say, "Ok Google, turn up the thermostat."
Your data
Check out Google's privacy policy and Google's commitment to privacy at home to better understand how your data will be processed. Your data or account will not migrate to Google until you have read and accepted the terms in the next screens.
Tap "Continue with Google" to open the "Sign in with Google" page to choose the account you'd like to link to Nest. When you finish these steps, users receive a confirmation email "Thank you for migrating to a Google Account." They're asked to "Sign in to the Nest or Home app on all your devices using your Google Account."
This option is widely deployed, although some non-Google account sign-in issues may prevent you from completing the process. Transition is optional, allowing users to stay within existing Nest privacy policies and conditions. However, new smart devices may only be available for Google Accounts in the future.
