The global streaming giant, Netflix has bought the rights to "The Wandering Earth", the blockbuster movie being touted as the first mainstream science fiction movie in China.
The film was the Chinese New Year's hit – it opened in fourth position on February 5 – but climbed to the top and has not yet abandoned its stratospheric position. After 14 days in theaters, the epic has reported some 4.07 billion RMB ($ 603 million) and is expected to last several more weeks.
Adapted from a 2000 novel by the same name of the godfather of Chinese science fiction, Liu CIxin, the film tells the story of people working together to save the planet from our aging sun by imploding it. by moving it to another solar system with giant thrusters. .
Netflix operates almost at the scale of the planet, but not in China. Local regulations mean that it is forbidden. This did not prevent the platform from yielding some of its content to the Middle Kingdom, thanks to an agreement with the local giant iQIYI streaming. Netflix is also slowly adding to its list of Mandarin content through the production of original series and acquisitions. Netflix has not given a date for its release.
