and the new original Netflix movie Milkshakes with powder, which began airing on the service on Wednesday, is a violent, hyper-kinetic attack on the senses of its viewers. There are girls with guns. A group of sexy female assassins. Plus sleek action scenes, dark humor, and colorful anime-like visuals. All the ingredients, in other words, of a potential success for the streamer.
Oh, and we didn’t even mention the star-studded cast. The film, from director Navot Papushado, features performances by Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett and Carla Gugino, as well as Paul Giamatti. So how has it been received so far? Well, that’s actually the somewhat surprising part.
Milkshakes with powder – now streaming on Netflix
Granted, the nearly 2-hour movie has only been available to stream on Netflix for around 24 hours at the time of writing. While I’m currently browsing the app’s 10 best movies rankings, Thursday afternoon the movie is the # 1 movie title currently streaming on Netflix. (Netflix, remember, publishes a daily, updated ranking of the Top 10 of all TV shows and movies on the service).
However, the feedback from critics and audiences doesn’t seem to be where Netflix or the filmmakers probably want them to be. At least not yet.
On the Rotten Tomatoes exam aggregation website currently, Milkshakes with powder has a disappointing 67% of the reviews. It’s based on 49 reviews to date. The public reaction, meanwhile, is even worse. Based on over 50 user reviews to date, the movie has a score of 54%.
A bit more
For my money, however, this is exactly the kind of entertaining escape fare that’s perfect for this moment in time. “While it’s dangerously close to being a rush for pure, substance-free sugar, Milkshakes with powder is a brutal explosion that will absorb audiences into its neon-infused universe, ”reads the Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Consensus.
The film also fits well in a genre that Netflix is getting better and better at. Made up of big, daring and explosive action movies that deliver two hours of fun and insane entertainment. Thought Army of the dead; Extraction; and Spenser Confidential.
A Forbes writer went so far as to suggest that Milkshakes with powder could possibly become Netflix’s biggest action film in 2021. In the meantime, here are some of the reactions to the film on Twitter so far:
