Netflix’s new Jean-Claude Van Damme movie finally starts airing today

Here’s a pairing I’m not sure many people were asking for, but we got it anyway. Jean-Claude Van Damme’s latest action-packed feature film, The last mercenary, debuted on Netflix on Friday. And, if I’m being honest… that sounds like a pretty decent action title, at least based on the trailer. In a way that you might have hesitated to pay the full price of the ticket to see it at the theater. But as a Netflix frenzy, it’s not a big step to click that “play” button to check it out.

Jean Claude Van Damme, on Netflix

In this one hour and 52 minute thriller, Van Damme plays a “legendary secret agent” turned mercenary. The one who must come out of his hiding place to save the son he did not know he had. “The last mercenary is an incredibly exciting project and allows me to tackle a new genre, ”Van Damme said in a statement last year while filming the film.

“I have always been a fan of Jean-Paul Belmondo, and I hope to take up the torch of action comedy in my own way. David Charhon’s screenplay brings all these elements together in a very successful way. A beautiful story with emotion, a lot of action and a lot of humor.

According to the official Netflix synopsis, Van Damme’s character Richard Brumère is also known as La Brume. He is a former super-spy who must save his son’s life after being threatened by a mafia operation. Richard reaches out to old contacts. He also teams up with “a bunch of reckless kids” as well as with “an offbeat bureaucrat” to come to the aid of his son.

No surprise, my math for deciding what to see in a theater was very different in pre-pandemic times. When there were a lot more options and opportunities. A movie like this might have been an acceptable choice for someone who usually goes to the movies. Say, once a week. It’s a boat in which I was more or less, once upon a time.

In the post-coronavirus era dominated by streamers like Netflix, however, I can imagine myself checking out more fares like Van Damme’s latest. The kind of movie, in other words, that I might never have made the trip to the movies for. The last mercenary is an action flick that gets the job done, even if it’s forgettable by the time you’re done.

Reaction

So far, critics seem to be surprisingly in agreement with this new action star character as well. As of this writing, the film has an 88% review score, based on reviews from eight critics. We’ll see how that changes, as more reviews come in. ”Writes Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com.
