The substance was found in drugs during the production process in China, reports the Health and Youth Inspection (IGJ). The IGJ tells NU.nl that about 150,000 people in the Netherlands use the drug.
The recall is valid for all of Europe. According to the inspection, it is only medicines made in a factory in China. These medications are prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, the treatment of patients who have had a recent heart attack and the treatment of heart failure.
The possibility that a patient actually has cancer using the drug is not great. This has been demonstrated by a first European analysis. According to the RIVM, it is comparable to the extra risk of cancer by regularly eating roast meat.
Patients who have a drug valsartan at home can check if it is a drug from the plant concerned. If they have any questions, they can contact their pharmacy or their attending physician.
