The money that the large-scale studied life lines of the province of Groningen receives should be used for nothing. The grant must ultimately lead to profits and jobs.
According to MP Patrick Brouns, the money that goes to Lifelines is not intended for the infrastructure of the project. The five million euros can not be used for, for example, financing data storage or paying employees.
Five Million Euros
The three northern provinces support Lifelines for the next five years with a million euros annually. The grant money that companies can use is reserved for the project. This concerns, for example, ICT projects such as the Personal Health Environment, where patients and participants can see their data.
This means that Lifelines does not only receive money, but must apply to the province. This needs to be done with companies or projects that use Lifelines.
Brouns wants to create more jobs: "We want to bring the projects that are taking place around Lifelines to the market to make money and create jobs," says Brouns.
Thirty years ago
On Thursday, it became clear that the screening program, involving 150,000 assessments, can begin a new five-year research cycle. This is crucial for the success of Lifelines, which aims to survey participants for thirty years. The first ten years are now in progress
Fewer participants
At the beginning of the project, 167,000 inhabitants of Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland participated. Ten years after the start, there are 17,000 fewer. According to Lifelines, this is partly due to mortality, moves, illness or because participants find the survey too intensive.
If Lifelines is funded for ten years after this research cycle is not yet certain. The drivers must then take back the farmer to collect the money.
