Strong increase in the number of accidents with trucks

The number of accidents involving trucks has increased sharply last year. In 2016, 1000 accidents were recorded, last year a small 1500. The figures come from Stimva, Incident Management Trucks.

In accidents and breakdowns on Dutch motorways, a foreign truck driver is involved in 40% of cases. This mainly concerns Poland (9%), Germans (5%) and Romanians (5%).

About 13% of trucks on Dutch roads have a foreign registration plate. Accurate figures on the number of foreign drivers driving in trucks with a Dutch registration plate and the number of kilometers traveled by foreign truckers in the Netherlands do not exist.

Ask why the number of accidents with trucks has increased so much and why so many foreign drivers are involved in accidents and breakdowns. TLN has no answer to the question of the overrepresentation of foreign drivers in the numbers

TLN President Arthur van Dijk wants his organization to play a role in this research. Van Dijk has an idea which means that the number of accidents has increased. He thinks, among other things, of the use of the phone while driving, both in freight cars and in private cars. Van Dijk also highlights the scary behavior of drivers of passenger cars, such as cutting trucks.

Busy

Busy on the road, according to the Stimva, is the main cause of the increase in the number of accidents. Because the economy works well, freight transportation increases considerably.

In terms of incidents, 2017 was a record year, but it looks like this year's numbers are even more disturbing. During the first half of the year, the number of incidents has increased by 20%.
